Ancient Moana by Wickfield Ancient Moana by Wickfield
Well guys, I saw Moana this weekend...man, that was an amazing movie!  Definitely the best out of Disney's CGI films, plus the soundtrack was wonderful!  I had drawn Moana as part of my historically accurate seriesbut I always thought the flats for that particular drawing looked better than the final shaded version.  So in honor of the film I decided to do a variant version of my historically accurate pic with the coloring style I've been using in my recent uploads.  I hope you like it, be sure to check out the movie if you haven't seen it yet - it's available on Netflix! :D (Big Grin)

Thank you!  There's not a lot of art for pre-contact Polynesia so I wanted to do my best. :)

LOVING the tattoos on Moana * O *
Also agree about the soundtrack - I thought Tangled was good, Frozen was okay, but Moana was amazing for me.

Thanks!  I made a note on my original drawing about the tattoos, I mostly just tried to reproduce some of the patterns from her skirt and put them on her arm instead. ;)

I see people nearly every day with authentic Polynesian tattoo. And growing up in New Zealand, I'm totally familiar with Maori tattoo.

Cannot recall it now - did any of the women in Moana have the chin tattoo ('moko')? They should have - for authenticity.

Most of the people in Moana had pretty discreet tattoos, I think so that Maui's heavy tattooing would have more contrast.

Yeah, it was just a remake of the one I did last year (literally I just re-used the lineart) but I'm liking the thicker lines + flat coloring a lot better lately.

Ahhh, I see.

I couldn't remember your original version of Moana cause in reality I don't look up other peoples DA account much, gee I don't even come here on DA that much nowadays since I'm so busy.

Another very good picture. Keep up the good work. Also confession: this is the first I'm hearing of Moana and you've got me interested now. I'll have to take a look. Thanks.

Honestly I was kind of burned out on Disney after the whole Frozen craze, but my dad (of all people) wanted to watch Moana this weekend, so I was glad he talked me into it!  The guy who wrote the soundtrack also wrote Hamilton and the songs are so good in this that now I'm inclined to go check out Hamilton too! :D

I'm glad you finally got to see Moana. As I've stated before, I found it a bit lowkey compared to Zootopia, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. The blue background helps make Moana stand out more than in your previous picture.

Sadly, thanks to this movie, I've got an obsession real bad for a certain shiny crab. :giggle:

Hahaha oh no Tamatoa was my favorite too! I relate to his theme song on so many levels....

I know--the minute he started to sing--I fell in love--he had all the vibes of a classic Disney villain. He was both charmingly hilarious yet also insanely dangerous. Most of Disney's villains these days are the hidden ones where you don't always know they're the bad guy until they reveal their true colors when the movie's almost over. I was pleased to once again have the kind of villain that simply screamed "villain" from the very start. Not to mention, we finally got another villain song--and it's so good that it's been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it. :giggle:

Plus I loved the David Bowie reference, that was really funny and unique IMO.  I keep thinking it would be fun to draw a humanized Tamatoa, but since I've got a list of ideas the length of my arm I can't guarantee it will happen. XD

Human Tamatoas are frickin' awesome! I'd love to see you do one! If you manage to find the chance of course. I've managed to make one myself.
Yeah, the Bowie reference was intentional, since Tamatoa's voice actor just happens to be really good at imitating him. If you've ever seen Rick and Morty, he voiced a character called Fart who sings a Bowie-esque song called "Goodbye Moonmen." :giggle:
Oh, but the best part--Tamatoa even has Bowie's eyes--straight down to one pupil being larger than the other--I love that of all things to put in a Disney move, we got a David Bowie crab. :giggle:

I can kinda understand why they gave her a top XP The rest of the outfit looks kinda like how the movie did it, but with a different design to it

Yeah, to be honest if I was going sailing I think I'd appreciate the extra protection from the elements you would get from a tube top! :D

XP I thought it was more like a cloth strap tied to her breasts than anything else.
