Finally, I got something put together for *zimeta08 's Childhood Toys contest! Originally I had planned to draw a particular Barbie I had when I was 8 or 9, but I've been wanting to try painting again for a while, and so I decided to try it out with a picture of my Josefina doll, the American Girl I got when I was 13. I was really excited to get Josefina even though I was a bit older at the time - she was so beautiful and her things just had so much flair and color! 7 years later, and I'm still collecting for her, and in the process I've learned so much about history and culture, and developing my collection has helped me to learn other skills, like sewing and photography, I might not have tried otherwise. I love my Josefina!
As far as this picture goes....yes, I know, the blouse fabric looks awful. Apparently depicting folds is something I'm going to have to practice (I drew her in an outfit that is relatively new and was never shown in her book illustrations). But I tried to make her look more like the doll than the official book illustrations, and I think I succeeded there. I also tried to imitate Goya's works (like this one: [link]) and that was fun.
I hope I win, but if I don't, this was good practice and a lot of fun!
At first I thought this was Addy lol ha. I love dolls that I think they are an art. And that you get to learn the culture and history from these special dolls. They come with cool props too and a book of their own stories, which is great. Not many dolls have that much creativeness to them. I like this artwork, you should do it for all the American Girls.
I can see why - she looks a bit darker in the thumbnail and in smaller views. And yes, AGs are just...awesome. ^_^ I probably won't do one for all the girls but I might draw Cecile and Marie-Grace since their illustrations aren't really that great.
This is a beautiful pic. I hope you win the contest. I love how you drew Josefina, she rememebers me about the viceroyalty of new spain (el virreinato de la nueva españa), it is wher Spain colonized Mexico, and she might be mestiza because of how she looks . Thanks for Miguel Hidalgo and other heores we have got equality and peace . I am from Mexico, and I love the culture and history of my country. I just admit it, this is an incredible job, and I like the doll and title. Good luck
Thank you for the comment - it's great to hear from someone who actually is FROM Mexico! I agree that she does look like she might have some European ancestry (I think the doll herself looks like that too).
Mine has Pleasant company body, Limbs and torso, while she has a Mattel head due to that head replacement she got. I had the head replacement done last year I think.
