I made an influence map a few years ago, but since then my artistic style and inspiration has changed quite a bit, so I thought I would post a new one with my updated influences. I am strongly drawn to stylized works with good use of color and line, all aspects I try to imitate in my own art.
Influences include: Disney's Pocahontas - loved the film ever since I was little, but I couldn't figure out why since I didn't particularly care for the storyline. Eventually I realized that I loved it VISUALLY - the stylism and color choices are amazing Genndy Tartakovsky (via Dexter's Lab and Sym-bionic Titan) - he has such a unique visual style that blends a lot of different elements (anime, retro, futuristic, etc.) seamlessly Lisa Frank - I grew up in the 90s and her colors are awesome, don't deny it Charles Dickens - of course he is a writer and not an artist, but he taught me to push characterization in both writing and art. Try drawing one of his characters by their description some time - it's a really good exercise Bruce Timm - not a huge influence but I like his use of angles in his character design Rob Renzetti - This is a pic of MLAATR but I also love Mina and the Count. His work is very retro and minimalist in a good way, and I appreciate both his character and background design and use of color Sandro Botticelli - my favorite Renaissance artist because he employs line and is amazing at drawing hair Turn-of-the-century illustration - this is Edmund Dulac but I also like Arthur Rackham and others because of their stylish and detailed linework Mucha/Art Nouveau - my #1 influence for maintaining linework and combining it with flat colors Architecture - Important for studies of space, line, and angles Minimalist/retro design (and technically also Iron Giant) - I like to remind myself to keep my art simple and I really like the work of Mondo and films like the Iron Giant that employ retro techniques in modern art Dreamworks 2D animation - as a kid I preferred Dreamworks movies because they were more stylized and interesting to look at than the Disney films which were rounder and "sweeter" at the time, and the style has since been a major influence on me Historic fashion - taught me how to use details and clothing to individualize characters and also how to draw cloth (I also sew in real life and that also helps with understanding in drawing clothing)
